Dryer Energy Savings

Dryers use a considerable amount of energy.  However, try the following tips to reduce energy use and save.

1.     Before taking your clothes out of your washer, either use an extra spin cycle or fast spin speed to extract as much water out of the clothes.  This will reduce the amount of time that the clothes need to spend in the dryer.

2.     When putting your clothes in the dryer, shake them out so they are not all wadded together, so they will dry faster, as well as be less wrinkled.  Clothes will also be less wrinkled if  you take the clothes out of the dryer as soon as the drying cycle is complete.

3.     Do not overload the dryer or it will take longer for your clothes to dry. Conversely, do not load the dryer with only a few items, or you will be spending a lot on energy to dry very little.

4.     Do not add wet items to a dryer load that is already partly dry.

5.     Dry heavier and lighter fabrics separately, since they take different amounts of time to dry, to prevent over drying and wasting energy.

6.     If you are drying more than one load, put lighter fabrics in the first load so the residual heat in the dryer will help dry the heavier fabrics faster.  Always dry one load right after the other to make use of the residual heat.

7.     Do not dry your clothes excessively.  Dry is dry.  Try setting your dryer to a shorter cycle. If your dryer has a moisture sensor make sure you use it.

8.     If your dryer has a cool down cycle use it so your clothes will finish drying with the residual heat left in the dryer.

9.     Make sure you clean the lint filter after each load to maintain the dryer’s efficiency.  Also periodically check the air vent exhaust hose for blockages.

10.   If buying a new dryer, make sure it has a moisture sensor.  Also consider a natural gas dryer which may cost less to operate than an electric dryer.
